A Word of Encouragement

Grace, Hope & Peace, Friend;

The world mocks the struggle EVERYONE experiences, with comical images - an angel on one shoulder, a devil on the other, whispering in your ears.

Paul describes that struggle in Romans 7. First, he clarifies that the law only applies to the living. A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives - when he dies, she is free to marry another. And, because Jesus died for us, we spiritually died with Him and His resurrection is ours also. (Romans 7:1-4)

We were raised to Bear fruit for God. (Vs. 4) [Love, joy, peace, etc. (Galatians 5:22-23)]

We have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.

Romans 6:4

If that is true, why do we still struggle with sin? Why did Paul - a powerful missionary for God - still struggle? Even Paul had trouble with that question!

We know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold into bondage to sin. For I do not understand what I am doing; for I am not practicing what I want to do, but I do the very thing I hate.

Romans 7:14-15

He explained, If I hate the things I'm doing - if I hate sinning - then I agree with the law. The spiritual part of me - raised to life in Jesus - agrees with the law - I hate sin. But my body is still a slave to sin and I continually find myself doing the things I hate (Romans 7:16-19)

But if I do the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

Romans 7:20

That struggle is between our two natures - the spiritual and the flesh - and it is not simply, Which voice will you listen to?

Paul continued, I joyfully agree with God's law in my mind, but my body rebels against my mind; Making me a prisoner of the law of sin that is in my flesh! (Romans 7:22-23)

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?

Romans 7:24

Since both natures exist in us, is there any hope or possibility that we can win spiritually?

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Romans 7:25

Don't give up. In Ephesians, Paul says our struggle is against Satan and encourages us to put on the armor God gives us, to stand firm against Satan's schemes. (Ephesians 6:4-17)

Elohim Uzeinu - God, our strength - You know my struggles. Help me use the armor, You have provided, for victory over Satan.

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

1 John 4:4
